I live in Herefordshire with my husband, my young daughter, 18 alpacas and 2 cats, having moved from London where I was a primary school teacher for 10 years. Although my beautiful alpaca farm is an ideal setting for my four-year-old now, what about later? I wondered how I could help prepare her for the world women now live in? I became aware of Kim McCabe’s work with pre-teen girls in a book by world-renowned child psychologist Steve Biddulph called Raising Girls in the 21st Century. This is a great book by the way, I really recommend it! In it, he raves about the work that Rites for Girls does with girls at a time when they are battling against so much judgement and pressure to be something other than themselves. I saw this in the girls I taught. So, I looked Rites for Girls up and now I’m running groups myself!
My groups provide a safe space where girls can truly value themselves and become confident in their uniqueness. We talk about the changes that they will experience in their pre-teen years and beyond. We have monthly get-togethers where they can feel heard and valued, exploring different topics in open and honest conversation. I encourage the girls to question and discuss topics in a relaxed environment, at their own pace, whilst being supported by me and most importantly each other.
Mothers, during these sessions I invite you to form a circle of your own, to support each other and build a group of women that your daughters can turn to in later years. You will be discussing similar topics to your daughter, which will not only deepen your connection to her but shows her that you are invested in this journey too.
I’m passionate about celebrating the journey of becoming a young woman. Women are amazing! Let’s celebrate ourselves and our differences!
It would be a privilege to support your daughter in this way. If this interests you both, then please book a free taster session to help you decide whether it is something you would like to continue.
