The idea of a Mother-Daughter Date is for you to spend time alone together, once a month for a few hours with your daughter. You might view the school holidays as a greater opportunity to spend more time together or an extra complexity as you try to juggle work, childcare and possibly the needs of more than one child.
We spoke to friends, family and the Rites for Girls Team to find out how they use this time with the young women and girls in their life to give you some ideas for different budgets and periods of time.
“Sharing a Dip-Dab (remember those?!) on a park bench and chatting about the next school year with my youngest was a perfect MSD. Took my daughter (10) to the shops to look for a bikini for me and a lip gloss for her and then for hot chocolate and cake — she felt very grown up and loved her MDD” Sophia, St Albans RfG facilitator
“My daughter is 10 and we have enjoyed a few MDD. We’ve been out on a horse-riding hack and read a book together over bubble tea by the river, we have plans to paint a portrait of each other and also take a midnight walk in the dark.” Laura
“For the last few years my daughter and I have gone away for a couple of nights over the summer for a mother/daughter break. It’s important for both of us. Last year felt particularly special as we spent time visiting somewhere I loved to go as a child – the Weald and Downland open air museum in Sussex. The weather was kind, the museum even better than I remembered, and we had the most wonderful time.” Felicity
“We do this too. I love it. From when she was 5 years old we made sure we always went away each summer for a camping weekend together. She’s now nearly 22 and we still do it but this year she’s requested an upgrade to a Premier Inn 😀. They definitely get more expensive as they get older!” Suzanne
“Lily and are I planning to walk the Seven Sisters Cliff walk together in a few weeks’ time (20km from Seaford to Eastbourne). I’ve walked sections of it with friends over the years but never walked this far with her before… wish us luck.” Nancy
“Swimming, jacuzzi and spending a while at the hairdryers afterwards chatting and drying our hair followed by going to a cafe for iced coffees. Also just been to one of the outdoor cinemas and picnic.” Catherine, Mum to four daughters (including a newborn)
“Chrissy (9) is very creative, we love taking our sketchbooks and snacks pretty much anywhere, parks are often our go-to though, and its lovely just spending a couple of hours together drawing or painting, eating and chatting. Ericka (7) is a big board game fan and really enjoys playing a 2-player game just us.” Jeni
“Amelia and I are doing the couch to 5k together (a running programme) – although some days she is quite keen to get back to the couch. It gives us the chance to talk and have a shared experience.” Angeline
We would love to hear what you are doing to create some special time with your daughter this summer. Do share below and for more about Mother-Daughter Dates and the benefits to you both take a look at the first chapter of Kim’s book ‘From Daughter to Woman’.
